iPlayFourier is an intuitive learning tool for iPad. Learn about the Physics of Sound, and the Sound of Physics.
Do you love music and sound? Are you fascinated by science, physics and mathematics? Put on your earbuds and experiment with iPlayFourier. You’ll make all sorts of connections and discoveries, because the sound and the wave graphs evolve in real time as you experiment.
4 built-in tutorials get you started. Please visit our growing website and blog at www.dnd-apps.com for more teaching and learning resources.
For best results use quality earbuds, headphones, or external speakers, because the sounds are CD-quality.
Are you a teacher? Use the HDMI cable and connect your iPad to an external display for your demonstration lectures. iPlayFourier will help you make the concepts real. (HDMI output currently works on iPad2 only)
Fourier mathematics is named for Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768 - 1830)

A technical summary of iPlayFourier:
iPlayFourier uses a Fourier sine series with positive and negative coefficients.
You can control the amplitudes of first 8 components.
The individual components are shown in a “Component Waves” view.
The components are added together and shown in the “Synthesized Waveform” view.
The waveform is rendered in CD-quality audio (16 bit, 44.1 kHz). The fundamental frequency can be adjusted over a broad audio range.

A retro-looking Numeric Keypad appears when you tap on the Frequency, Period, or Amplitude displays. Enter a precise frequency and you can tune iPlayFourier to a specific note on your piano, for example.
You can now enter negative amplitudes for the 8 Fourier Components. A negative amplitude flips the wave upside down about the horizontal (time) axis. This lets you synthesize a broader range of waveforms. Added presets with negative amplitudes.
