Patti Smith: Dream of Life

The Patti Smith: Dream of Life app is a virtual art exhibit, the most recent in a series of multimedia collaborations between National Book Award-winning artist Patti Smith and Sundance award-winning filmmaker and photographer Steven Sebring. The app features:

-Photos of Patti Smith, on tour and at home, taken from 1997-2008
-360° images of Patti's prized possessions
-Film clips from Steven Sebring’s Sundance Film Festival award-winning Dream of Life documentary
-Polaroids taken by Patti Smith


Patti Smith: Dream of Life began as a documentary filmed by acclaimed photographer Steven Sebring. After shooting for over a decade, the film project grew, evolving into a book and later a gallery installation, Objects of Life, to which both Patti and Steven contributed.

The Patti Smith: Dream of Life app for the iPad is the newest addition to the Dream of Life collection. The app is a virtual art gallery, a multimedia portrait of an extraordinary life and an enduring friendship. Throughout the course of their work together, Patti and Steven have contemplated those things that come to define a person: dresses and guitars, cameras and convictions. These are the treasured belongings and frayed edges of a life well lived.

The Patti Smith: Dream of Life app invites you to browse Patti's personal Polaroid collection, tour the Objects of Life exhibit, and view videos and stills from the Dream of Life film.

“Life,” Patti writes, “is an adventure of our own design, intersected by fate and a series of lucky and unlucky accidents.”

These photographs, objects, and words are the mementos of that adventure.
