Has this ever happened to you? You drive to the post office, ready to mail the latest draft of your manuscript to an editor you met at a party a couple of weeks ago. She's going on vacation soon, and you're hoping she'll take your novel to read on the beaches of Cabo San Lucas. A relaxed and happy editor is a forgiving editor, as they say.
As you pull into the empty parking lot your initial reaction is joy. What luck, you think to yourself, the post office isn't busy. But your joy gives way to concern, as you realize there's not just few cars, but no cars. You open the driver's side door and survey the scene, looking for some sign of life.
A post office door displays many signs. But as you approach the only thing you see is an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper with "CLOSED FOR PRESIDENT'S DAY" set in 36pt Times New Roman. You could still drop it in the mail, but it would never get there in time. You could have mailed it last week, but in your hubris you chose to wait.
Reflexively, you drop your manuscript. The envelope falls open, and the pages begin to flutter out. You drop to your knees as a plaintive "NOOOOO!" escapes your throat. A crowd gathers. Somewhere, a baby cries. You watch the papers flying away and realize what has escaped will never be recaptured.
