和時計　WADOKEI―Japanese clock

この和時計は、江戸時代初期の不定時法に基づいて、
日の出36分前を明け六つ(卯三刻)、日の入り36分後を暮れ六つ(酉三刻)とし、
その間を六等分して「刻」を、刻を四等分して「初刻、二刻、三刻、四刻」としたものです。
日が昇れば働き、日が暮れれば休む、という自然に合わせた生活を送るための時計と言えます。
This clock has the system based upon the unequal temporal hour, used in Edo era in Japan about 300 years ago. A criteria is set at the time 36 minutes before sunrise ('Ake-Mutsu'), the other criteria is set at the time 36 minutes after sunset ('Kure-Mutsu'). Two periods between these two criteria are divided into 6 parts equally, as each of them are called 'Toki'. Every 'Toki' are divided into four parts further. This is a clock for ancient natural life - awake and start working at sunrise, stop working and sleep at sunset.

和時計の文字盤は等間隔ですが、現代のアナログ式洋時計と異なり、針の進む速度が昼と夜とで、また季節によって自動的に変化します。
文字盤の上半分が昼、下半分が夜、洋時計で言う9時の位置(左端)が明け六つ、3時の位置(右端)が暮れ六つです。
The velocity of the single arm of this clock is varied by day and night, and by seasons, though the dial of this clock is divided equally. It is different from the conventional analog clock whose arms always move at constant velocity. The upper half of the dial of this clock represents daytime, and the lower half represents nighttime. The left end of the dial is Ake-Mutsu, the right end is Kure-Mutsu respectively.

日の出と日の入り、明け六つと暮れ六つ、それぞれの時刻は右下の[日]のボタンをタップして見ることができます。
これらの時刻はお使いのデバイスに設定されている地域の時間で表示されます。
You can see the conventional times of sunrise and sunset, Ake-Mutsu and Kure-Mutsu, by tapping 'status' button at the bottom of the clock. These times are based upon your device's local time zone.


位置の設定について–Location setting

この時計は日の出・日の入り時刻を季節(日付)と位置(経緯度)から自動的に算出します。
初期設定では位置は東京になっていますが、[地]のボタンをタップして現れるパネルから変更することができます。
経緯度は世界の都市から選択、数値設定、お使いのデバイスの位置情報(GPSなど)のいずれかによって設定できます。
This clock calculates the times of sunrise and sunset based upon location (longitude and latitude) and season (date) automatically. Initial setting of the location of this clock is set to Tokyo. You can change the location setting by tapping 'location' button. In 'Location' panel, you can set location by selecting cities all over the world, or set longitude and latitude, or use your location data from your device's location functionalities (ex. GPS).


時報機能について–Time signal

和時計の正刻(「子」「丑」などの目盛の中央)には、その刻の数(文字盤の数字)だけ時刻を知らせる鐘が鳴ります。
また、大晦日の「子」の正刻から除夜の鐘が108回鳴ります。
At every 'Seikoku' (the arm at the center of every 'Toki' as outermost divisions of the dial), bells are rung. At around midnight, Seikoku of '子' of new year's eve, bells are rung 108 times as 'Joya-no-kane' (to remove 108 earthly desires and welcome new year purely) as same as most of temples in Japan.
