SMB Video is an application for accessing and playing video files on network file servers that support the SMB protocol. SMB (also called CIFS) is the native network file sharing protocol of Microsoft Windows. Mac OS X 10.1 and later and most Linux distributions support it. SMB is also supported on a variety of other systems, including many network file storage appliances.
SMB Video can play device compatible video formats, including many MPEG4 (MP4, M4V), Quicktime (MOV) and 3GPP (3GP, 3G2) format video files.
Refer to your device specifications for a list of compatible formats.
SMB Video significantly extends the capability of your device by providing access to video libraries that are external to iTunes. Since SMB Video does not use local device storage, there is essentially no limit to the number of videos that can be accessed and played.

Important notes:
SMB Video requires a WiFi connection. Carrier connections (WWAN) are not supported.
SMB Video does not create permanent local copies of files, so device storage capacity is not affected. It does create temporary files.
SMB Video cannot play DRM protected files, such as those purchased through iTunes.
SMB Video does not write to the file server, so there is no danger of file modification or virus introduction.
SMB Video supports Microsoft Windows 2000 and newer systems. Windows 98 and earlier systems are not supported. SMB Video also supports Samba (2.0 and newer) on Linux and other Unix systems and Mac OS X 10.1 and newer with built-in SMB support.
