The golden ratio has fascinated Western intellectuals of diverse interests for at least 2,400 years. In 1854, Adolf Zeising found the golden ratio expressed in the arrangement of branches along the stems of plants and of veins in leaves. He extended his research to the skeletons of animals and the branchings of their veins and nerves, to the proportions of chemical compounds and the geometry of crystals, as well as in human body proportions. In these natural phenomena he saw the golden ratio operating as a universal law. In practical usage, architects, artists, book designers, and others often use the Golden Ratio in the dimensional relationships of their works in a belief that applying the golden ratio will yield pleasing, harmonious proportions.
