In November 2014 Māori Women’s Development Inc MWDI participated in a KIWA SLAM project in Kaikohe, Northland, New Zealand.
Old Valley Road Wooden Creations:
Since carving his first his first piece of wooden art, a candlestick holder, in the 1980’s Alastair has continued experimenting with different native woods whilst aspiring to become a creative craftsman that led him to acquire a collection of pieces through his persistence and growing knowledge of wooden artwork.
Taking a piece of rough unformed wood and turning it into a piece of art is unique. Masterpieces are usually created by building the imagination into an art form. It is the wood that speaks to you through the grain that is exposed after removing the outer layer of bark. Each piece is never the same as the grain dictates how the finished piece will look.
Alastair considers his wooden creations are "Taonga" (treasures) given to the recipient . Each piece tells a story; raw material taken a long time to develop, what type of wood, where the wood comes from that is made to be a treasured household object.
Derived from history, inspired by nature, carved from the essence of the far north and made especially for you.
