A recent article in Forbes magazine shares the secret to landing a job at the Top 10 Silicon Valley. Applicants go through rounds of interviews with a variety of seemingly odd questions twisters and tales. While the questions may appear unconnected, they are really trying to gauge the following:
Whether you know your field of expertise;
Whether you can apply what you know in an unfamiliar context; and
Whether you can make “creative” leaps to arrive at a solution;
Are you open to new ideas? Do you think in flexible ways?
The first approach that pops into your head is going to be wrong. In an interview a good approach is just to say, “Well, I think the obvious approach would be this, but that’s probably not going to work, and then give your analysis of why the obvious approach fails. That gets you talking. You want to avoid dead air. And usually once you analyze how one thing’s wrong, that’s a good first step towards just brainstorming various other strategies. They like to see people who are very free with ideas, even if they’re half-baked.”
