n 1992, Breakthrough was a simple drop-in shelter for homeless adults on Chicago's northside.
Today, Breakthrough operates two homeless shelters, a youth development program and a client-choice food pantry in East Garfield Park on Chicago’s westside.
Each year, the men’s and women’s shelters serve nearly 1,000 homeless adults, provide 24,000 nights of shelter and serve more than 70,000 meals.
The youth development program partners with families to surround young people from preschool to high school with role models. Students are exposed to academic enrichment, arts and science programs, and athletic and fitness programs.
The client-choice food pantry, meaning guests select food based on their families’ needs, distributes 10,000 bags of groceries to low-income families in the neighborhood, and offers employment training, on-site health care, and addictions counseling to hundreds of homeless individuals each year.
