Melanoma is a serious and sometimes life-threatening cancer. If the skin receives too much UV light (from the sun and sunbeds), ordinary skin cells called melanocytes may begin to grow abnormally and become cancerous. Everyone is at risk of getting skin cancer. It is very important to always examine your skin for new moles or changes in your moles.

Dermatologists recommend that you examine your skin from head-to-toe once a month, all year round, looking for any suspicious moles using the ABCDE signs of melanoma. It is vital to catch melanoma early. If melanoma is found and treated early, the chances of recovery are very good. If it is not found early, melanoma can grow deeper into the skin and spread to other parts of the body. Once melanoma has spread to other parts of the body beyond the skin, it is very difficult to treat.

THE ABCDE'S OF SKIN CANCER

A – Asymmetry

Melanoma can be asymmetrical - if you draw a line through a mole and the two halves do not match.

B – Border

The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven, notched or ragged.

C – Color variation

Watch out for mole with different shades of brown, tan or black. A melanoma can also become red, blue or some other color.

D – Diameter

Melanomas usually are larger than the size of a pencil eraser (1/4 inch or 6 mm) when they are discovered. But remember, a new melanoma will initially be smaller so be aware of new moles.

E – Evolution or change

Any change in size, shape, color, elevation, or any new symptom such as bleeding,itching or crusting are all serious signs of melanoma.
