Introducing the Yellowstone iPhone app made by people who live and work in Yellowstone National Park. This is a Lite version of the app, designed to introduce you to the basic features of the app. A few of the features are free, but most will prompt you for an in-app-purchase.
Free features include:
Emergency Services, with a GPS enabled map of the park.
Activities, with a descriptions and contact info for activities such as horseback riding, rafting, safaris, and boating on Yellowstone Lake.
Coyote, from the Wildlife Guide.
The full version of the app is designed to answer the everyday questions that one asks while driving around the Park, such as "Where is the nearest restroom?" or "What is the weather going to be like at Old Faithful today?" or "When did this part of the Park burn?"
The full version includes:
Complete GPS enabled maps of Yellowstone at 1:17,000 scale, including all thermal areas, contour lines, backcountry campsites, trailheads, and trails with a mileage guide. The park terrain is represented by shaded relief, and there is a descriptive legend for all map features. There are five levels of zoom in the map; the fourth level is shown as a screen shot.
A wildlife guide with photos of Yellowstone's "Big 8" wildlife, a guide to locating them in the park, the latest ecology topics for each, traits of each animal, and a scat and tracks guide. Coyote is included in the Lite version for free.
A weather guide with a 10-day forecast for eighteen locations around the park as well as apparel suggestions and climate descriptions for each season. Especially useful is the app’s ability to cache the forecast so that no cell phone signal is required to access it—very important in a park that largely has no cell phone coverage.
A fire guide with short articles on important topics such as fire management, ecology and history, including an interactive map showing burned areas in recent years. A special section is devoted to 1988 and the eight major fires that consumed the park during that devastating summer.
Maps to show you where to locate a restroom, where to buy fuel, and where to find a cell phone signal, should you need to make a call.

The music section of the app provides the user with all of the liner notes and photos from Yellowstone for Violin and Orchestra. This is included simply to make the user aware of Jett Hitt’s anthem to the park; the actual music requires a separate purchase from the iTunes store. Listeners have called it “the perfect soundtrack for driving around the park,” and critics have called it “full of the grandeur of the park, with soaring violin melodies.” It is sure to provide the perfect accompaniment to the many hours that you spend driving around Yellowstone.
