Food and health expert Elizabeth Peyton-Jones of www.epjhealth.com has created this App for people who want to lose weight and absorb the optimum nutritional benefits from food by creating and maintaining good digestive health. In her book Eat Yourself Young, she explains how an inefficient digestive system is one of the five processes of ageing – but once you get the digestion running smoothly, it helps you stay fit, youthful and lose weight.
Chewing is the first part of good digestion. If you eat food too fast and without chewing properly, the brain does not have time to register the food, which means that you eat more than you require and feel guilty afterwards. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to recognise that your stomach is full. It should take between 20-30 minutes to eat a meal. When badly chewed food is swallowed in chunks, the digestive system is unable to function properly, resulting in indigestion and heartburn.
If you are bingeing or eating quickly it can also be a sign of emotional issues and a feeling of guilt around the food. This App will help you focus on your food and take the fear and guilt away from eating.
It will make you mindful of every mouthful, thus allowing the mouth and tongue to do what they need to do as part of the digestive process.
HOW IT WORKS
From the App choose the meal that you are eating: it will have a timer set depending on the food you have chosen. When you have chosen your time, start the clock and start chewing. If you swallow before the timer has finished, don’t worry, just take another mouthful and swipe the App for it to start again. Continue these actions until you have finished your finished your meal. At the end of the meal, the App will tell you how well you have done and what your score is. You can improve on this score every time you eat.
