myFault uses official maps of seismic hazards in California to help you identify the dangers your home, school or workplace could face during an earthquake.
Produced by California Watch, the Golden State's largest investigative reporting team, myFault is based on the same government data used to report our series on seismic hazards in California's schools. The app shows how the places you care about could be affected by landslide, liquefaction and fault rupture zones.
It's important to note that because of minor differences in the ways maps can be displayed, our maps may be slightly different than their official counterparts. myFault also shows you how to verify any hazards you find with official state maps.
Official maps of landslide and liquefaction zones do not cover the entire state. For now, they primarily cover the San Francisco Bay Area and parts of Southern California. Fault zone maps, which are also included in the app, cover a much larger portion of California.
In addition to hazard maps, myFault also includes an earthquake preparedness checklist, based on recommendations by emergency responders, FEMA and the American Red Cross. It also includes a flashlight (LED flash-enabled devices only) for use in emergencies.
California Watch is a project of the Center for Investigative Reporting -- the nation's oldest non-profit investigative reporting organization, which has worked for more than 30 years with major media outlets nationwide. The team at California Watch pursues in-depth, high-impact reporting on issues such as education, public safety, health care and the environment.
REMEMBER: The mapping features of this app only work in California!
