The Concussion App from SportSafety Labs LLC is a free smartphone-based application that provides a convenient educational tool for parents, coaches and doctors of youth sports participants. It contains information on how to recognize a concussion in a convenient, portable format for use at sporting events. The Concussion App also includes useful emergency functions to call an ambulance via 911, to locate the nearest hospital with driving directions, and to send your location coordinates via email to emergency contacts and rescue personnel.
An optional concussion diagnostic module, available via in-app purchase, utilizes scientifically validated objective tests to evaluate the physiological and neurocognitive status of pre-concussion (baseline) and post-concussion (injured) athletes. The standardized presentation of the report and its data can be emailed from your smartphone to your physician to support their diagnostic interpretation of your condition. Physician’s post-injury reports may be forwarded via email from your smartphone to your club or league if you choose to do so for rapid documentation and approval for return-to-play status.
The Concussion App maintains all of your personal information on your own smartphone, and has no means of automatically sending your information to a central database. SportSafety Labs LLC does not maintain a database of user data. You have the ability to send your test results to your Physician via email only if you choose to do so.
The Concussion App features an in-phone database which a youth athlete’s parent may use to manage multiple children, a coach or manager to manage their entire team roster, and a club or league to manage all their participants across multiple teams.
The Concussion App is a portable, convenient, accurate field-ready smartphone-based application; it provides a personal baseline testing program which compares your own post-injury results versus your own pre-injury results rather than to “norms” or population samples of other athletes who have also taken the test.
The Concussion App can help you and your doctor make accurate, personalized comparisons for your return-to-play decision; it implements well-established and medically accepted versions of both physiological and neurocognitive tests and can be used an infinite number of times, providing a transparent scoring methodology and immediate results. The Concussion App is designed with 100% colorblind-safe colors throughout the application -- this benefits a significant percentage of the population who suffer various degrees of colorblindness and might otherwise be mis-diagnosed. The Concussion App is designed for serial administration -- the words and symbols in the tests are randomly re-arranged from a large bank of potential stimuli each time the test is given, minimizing potential learning effects that may be problematic in other concussion testing systems.
The Concussion App is based on decades of well-established medical research, including: Maddocks, DL; Dicker, GD; Saling, MM. “The assessment of orientation following concussion in athletes”. Clin J Sport Med 1995;5(1):32–3; P McCrory et. al., Br J Sports Med 2009;43:i76-i84 Supplement: “Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport: 3rd International Conference on Concussion in Sport; Zurich, November 2008”; Teasdale G, Jennett B. “Assessment of coma and impaired consciousness, a practical scale”.
