Dr. Franzen's Memory Effort Test

Complaints of memory impairment are frequently reported by patients in neurological and neuropsychological evaluations. These subjective complaints may be difficult to evaluate objectively, due to that fact that scores on existing tests are influenced by the level of effort. The 21-Item Memory Effort Test App is a test for exaggeration of existing problems or poor effort during the course of a neuropsychological examination. The 21-Item Memory Effort Test is designed to be used by licensed clinicians and doctors. The 21-Item Memory Effort Test was developed by Michael Franzen, Ph.D. and Grant Iverson, Ph.D. Research studies were used to develop cut-offs for accurate identification of optimal effort.

The 21-Item Memory Effort Test has been used in clinical studies and has been empirically compared with other methods. The 21-Item Memory Effort Test can be used to evaluate level of effort. It is designed to be used by healthcare providers who have training in the assessment of memory. It can not be used to diagnose malingering, but in the context of other clinical information, it can be used to inform decisions regarding the possible presence of malingered memory complaints. There are many reasons for incomplete effort and there are many forms of malingered complaints. The 21-Item Memory Effort Test is designed to be used only in the context of an evaluation of cognitive and memory complaints. It is meant to be used only by ealthcare providers and clinicians who have training and experience in cognitive evaluations.

The 21-Item word list task takes approximately five minutes to administer and score. Using this app, the clinician can interpret performance based on binomial probabilities, inconsistencies in performance, or rare levels of performance.

The App comes with five (5) patient tests and includes the instructional manual that can be read in the App, emailed, or printed on a iOS compatible printer. Additional tests may be purchased using in app purchase for as little as $1 each for a set of 15 test or $2 each for a set of 5 tests. Test results are available immediately after completion of the test. Each time a patient is tested, one test is used up. After the initial five tests are used, more tests will need to be purchased. You can test a patient more than one time, but each time counts as one test.

A separate End User Licensing Agreement is presented to the purchaser prior to App purchase. This EULA outlines the responsibilities of the clinician or doctor to safeguard patient information in accordance with HIPAA requirements and makes it clear that this App is intended for medical professionals. This App is not a medical device. Healthcare providers should not rely solely upon this application to make medical decisions and instead should rely upon their own independent judgment in accordance with relevant professional guidelines, standards, and applicable laws.

Since the 21-Item Memory Effort Test is most often used to assist the clinician with a determination of malingered memory complaints, an overview of malingering is provided in Chapter 2. A description of the test, administration instructions, and scoring procedures are provided in Chapters 3 and 4.
