If you need a new challenge for 2011, are training for a marathon in spring or simply enjoy running and want to be part of a big race day then this is for you - the Brighton Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 20th February 2011, celebrating its 21st anniversary.
Public places for the 2011 race are nearly sold out but there is still time to get involved - register today and secure your place in the Brighton Half Marathon, join the team of volunteers, or just line the roads of Brighton to cheer on the runners, soak up the atmosphere and help celebrate the 21st anniversary of a great and well established race.
A new flatter, faster route has been announced for the 2011 race, taking in many of Brighton's iconic sights. The new route will still start and finish on Madeira Drive on Brighton’s seafront, taking runners through the city centre, past the Royal Pavilion and up Grand Parade from the starting line before heading east past Brighton Marina to Roedean and back along the seafront taking in Brighton Pier, the West Pier and Hove Lawns. The westernmost point reached on the route is Hove Lagoon, with the race finishing on Madeira Drive. The number of entrants is limited to 8,000 for 2011.
There are also two 1 mile youth races taking place for young runners aged 8-11 and 12-16, giving them the chance to be chip timed and experience the crossing of a big finish line.
The Brighton Half Marathon main race starts on Madeira Drive, Brighton seafront, at 9 am on Sunday 20th February 2011, with the Youth Races starting at 9.20 am for the 8-11 and at 9.30 am for the 12-16 year old runners. Both Youth Races start at the far Eastern end of Madeira Drive adjacent to Black Rock car park, going straight along Madeira Drive, past the Peter Pan’s cheering point and finishing at the main finish line.
All the race info, a map of the route, training plans and details on how to get involved can be found on www.brightonhalfmarathon.com . You can register here or online, prices are £25 for non-affiliated runners and £22 for members of a running club. Prices to enter the youth races are £2-£3.
If you are not a runner but would like to actively contribute to the success of the Brighton Half Marathon then why not join the volunteer team? There are various roles available to suit your lifestyle and the amount of time you can commit, even a couple of hours of your time can make a difference! The Brighton Half Marathon is organised by and the main fundraiser for the Sussex Beacon, one of only two care centres in the UK providing innovative services to meet the changing needs of people living with HIV. The Sussex Beacon cares for people via a ten-bedded in-patient unit, Day Care and Health Management Services and they also run a monthly women and family service. The Sussex Beacon opened in 1992 as a purpose-built hospice for people dying of AIDS. Thanks to huge advances in drug treatments they now care for men and women living with HIV. Partner charities are St. Dunstan’s and WaterAid, with a range of other charities also having places available.
