Filo, Cleantes y Demea, los tres personajes de estos Diálogos..., no son solamente artificios del ingenio y la prudencia del autor, sino que representan el drama del hombre de su tiempo y el del hombre mismo que los ha imaginado y les da vida a lo largo del debate: los hombres modernos se encuentran en la situación de tener que apoyarse en el mundo de su experiencia, cuya falsedad ha sido declarada por la razón. Nace de ahí la conciencia de una inautenticidad vital, componente de la desesperación del hombre moderno que ha perdido a Dios y al mundo, y que ha visto menguado su ser por haberlo definido como pura razón.
