••• Go shopping with an Asian grandma •••
Have you ever tried cooking pad Thai or beef rendang but just couldn’t make heads nor tails of the recipe? Or have you wandered around an Asian market aimlessly searching for an ingredient you can't even pronounce? Fret no more. Asian Ingredients 101 is a comprehensive guide to East Asian, Southeast Asian and South Asian ingredients at your fingertips. Whether you are shopping at an Asian market or traveling in Asia, this app will help you to identify close to 100 ingredients ranging from spices to herbs to sauces using color photographs as well as their common names in different languages. It also tells you where to find the ingredients at the market (i.e. frozen or dried goods section) and offers little tidbits on selection and preparation.
••• About the Author •••
Patricia Tanumihardja is the author of "The Asian Grandmothers Cookbook—Home Cooking from Asian American Kitchens," (Sasquatch Books, October 2009), a treasury of 130 home-cooked recipes compiled from over a dozen Asian cultures. She is also a freelance writer who writes about food, travel and lifestyle through a multicultural lens. She has lived on three continents, speaks four languages and her myriad travels and cultural experiences inform her writing every step of the way. Pat especially enjoys covering topics that converge on food, history and culture, and as a former farmers’ market manager, she has a soft spot for small-scale family farmers and the sustainable produce they grow. Her stories are wide-ranging—from the story behind Grandma Pearlie’s sweet and sour pork to a kabocha how-to. Pat has been published in edibleSeattle, Monterey County Weekly, Sunset, Saveur, and Seattle Metropolitan, among other publications. "The Asian Grandmothers Cookbook—Home Cooking from Asian American Kitchens" is available on Amazon.com and independent bookstores everywhere. Please
