Derry City Council in partnership with Ilex the Urban Regeneration Company Ltd and the Strategic Investment Board for Northern Ireland are leading the bid for UK City of Culture 2013 in collaboration and joint support from the entire region of Northern Ireland. One of our unique selling points is the large catchment area of 1.7m people in Northern Ireland and the fact we are physically connected to another European country containing 4.4m people in the Republic of Ireland. Indeed there is a total catchment of 630,000 people in the North West area in Northern Ireland which includes Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. We intend to involve other Council regions in our Cultural Programme for 2013 and enable them to share in the benefits.
We believe that designation as UK City of Culture 2013 will allow our City to use culture as a driver for step changes in economic and regenerative benefits. It would allow us to devise events reflecting our identity and our own particular culture, thus fostering a sense of community, a sense of belonging and pride. We will also use culture as a catalyst for social and civic agendas, utilising its potential as a driver for economic benefits and promoting and enabling greater participation in, and experience of, cultural excellence. It recognises that culture galvanises cities, communities, organisations and individuals. It raises confidence levels, creates a unique sense of civic pride and improves the overall health and well being of communities.
It will be much more than a year long celebration and will deliver a programme which will excite, entertain, educate and deliver a lasting legacy.

Snow Patrol have backed Derry~Londonderry as UK City of Culture 2013 and have given permission for their song “Just Say Yes” to be the anthem for the bid.
