VINDEX™ is the most accurate worldwide source for real-time collectable wine prices.
THE ALGORITHM
The algorithm behind the VINDEX™ uses actual transaction data, updated daily, from every major auction house (Christies, Sothebys, Zachy’s, Acker-Merrall, etc.) as well as real-time sales data from the Vinfolio Marketplace, where over 7,000 bottles are bought and sold by collectors every month. (Note: Auction hammer prices are marked up by 20% to reflect average buyer’s premium.)
WHY IS IT BETTER THAN JUST LOOKING AT RETAIL PRICES?
Importantly, the VINDEX™ algorithm does not place large importance on retail listings as they represent asking prices – not actual sales or hammer prices - and also because bottle condition and provenance can vary so greatly between retailers. (VINDEX™ prices assume bottles in excellent condition with impeccable provenance.)
DOES EVERY WINE HAVE A VINDEX™ VALUE?
No, for two primary reasons: (1) The VINDEX™ is focused exclusively on “collectable” or “investment-grade” wines. So while we draw from the largest database of verified collectable wines in the world, we don’t list every one produced. (2) We only show a VINDEX™ price when there is sufficient depth and breadth of recent transaction data to support it. Rare or unusual bottles that don’t have sufficient data will not show a VINDEX™ price.
