God tells us in His Word: Because we reject God as sinners, trying to run life our own way without him, God's punishment for rebellion is death and judgement. But God is merciful and he loves us, in that while we were yet sinners, God sent his Son Jesus Christ into the world. Christ died in our place, taking the punishment we deserve so that we can be forgiven. God raised Jesus to life again, so now Jesus can give new life to all who trust in Him.
